Framlingham Castle

!Things to do and Places to see

Suffolk is a little known about gem, with its delightful towns and villages and stunning coastline and lovely beaches. There is plenty to do and see what ever age you are and whatever your interests are. This is by no means an exhaustive list but is just a flavour of what is on offer.

Click on the pictures and buttons to find out more information!

Laxfield

The ancient village of Laxfield is just about a 45 minute walk (or very short drive) from The Croft. Laxfield boasts of two excellent pubs, The Royal Oak a typical local with an optical illusion in the billiards room and The Kings Head, also known as The Low House with its listed Victorian interior with a tap room instead of a bar. The Kings Head has just been taken over by the community. Both serve food and are well reviewed by our campers. There is a well stocked Co-Op and Post Office so if you need to go shopping you don't need to travel far. Opposite here is a lovely museum in the Guildhall (circa 1520) - open at the weekends during the summer months. Well worth a visit.

Framlingham

Framlingham is one of the prettiest towns I know, with its stunning castle overlooking the mere (lake). The Castle is great to visit for children and adults a like (now made even more famous with Ed Sheeran's song - The Castle on the Hill). They often have events like jousting during the summer. I especially like walking around the ramparts.

Framlingham also has a market every Tuesday and Saturday.

Southwold and Suffolk Beaches

Southwold is a delightful traditional seaside town with its pier and brightly coloured beach huts. The 'Under the Pier Show' is a must visit attraction which will make you laugh out loud. Take a few pound coins with you to 'Wack the Banker' and enjoy the other totally wacky hand built machines. Walberswick is the opposite side of the river - you can take the foot ferry from one to another. Crabbing is an excellent pastime here.

Cove Hithe - shown in the picture is a few miles north of Southwold. This is probably my favourite beach and remains uncrowded. It is a 10 minute walk from where you park your car. Aldeburghis another lovely coastal town with far reaching beaches

Snape Maltings

Snape Maltings is situated on the picturesque River Alde. Beautiful walks and river trips can be taken from here. The Maltings is the home of the world famous Concert Hall run by Adeburgh Music. An eclectic mix of music to suit all tastes can be heard here in the spectacular building. In August they have the 'Summer Proms' on every day. You can buy tickets for £6 if you are happy to sit on the floor. They keep by 20 tickets to be sold on the morning of each performance from the box office (open at 9am). The maltings also has many art exhibitions, craft shops and cafes. From here you can walk to Iken or take a short drive there.

Orford and Orfordness

Orford has one of the most unusual and intact keeps. It is owned by English Heritage and is a must visit. You can also take a walk or boat trip along the River Alde, or visit Orfordness nature reserve - a 10 mile spit of shingle, with marsh land and waterways. There are scattered remains of buildings from when it was a Ministry of Defence Atomic Weapons Reseach Centre.

Not to be forgotten is the Lighthouse which can be seen from miles around.

Minsmere

Minsmere is a nature reserve owned and managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. There is a choice of coastal, woodland, wetland, and heathland scenaries, perfect for the young and old alike. This area has been made even more popular with the BBC Springwatch. Apparently a very good café here too!

Halesworth

Halesworth is our nearest town. It's a beautiful drive from the campsite going past Heveningham Hall. Halesworth town is a centred around a pedestrianised shopping area where many buildings date back to the 16th century. It has the largest millennium green in the UK - 50 acres of marshland and flood plain converted for the enjoyment of locals and visitors. Halesworth is also on the National Cycle Route 1. Take a walk following the Malt Trail or Hooker Trail - to find out about the brewing and malting history of Halesworth.

Blythe Valley

The River Blythe starts its journey in Laxfield, travelling then through Ubbeston and onto Heveningham where it can more easily be identified as a river. The river takes in many more delightful villages and towns, Huntingdon, Walpole, Halesworth, Holton and Blyford and on - eventually flowing out to see at the well known towns of Southwold and Walberswick.
